The severity depends on personal sensitivity, the duration of exposure and the type of mould. Medical advice is recommended for symptoms that may be related to mould. Prevention starts with moisture control, ventilation and cleaning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Health risks from mould<\/h2>\n<p>Exposure to mould spores can cause allergic reactions in sensitive people, such as sneezing, coughing, skin rashes, itchy eyes and breathing difficulties. Some moulds produce mycotoxins; prolonged exposure to high levels can lead to more serious problems such as infections and lung complaints.<\/p>\n<p>For people with asthma, exposure can worsen symptoms (coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness). Prolonged exposure can cause respiratory infections in people with weakened immune systems and, in rare cases, hypersensitivity pneumonitis (inflammation and scarring in the lungs). Air quality also suffers: mould growth often causes a musty odour and a stuffy atmosphere, which can aggravate symptoms.<\/p>\n<h2>Preventing mould growth<\/h2>\n<p>To limit the risks, it is important to tackle moisture problems \u2014 leaks, condensation and high humidity \u2014 and ensure good ventilation, regular cleaning and a healthy indoor climate.<\/p>\n<p>If a structural cause cannot be resolved immediately, a mould-resistant system \u2014 a dry paint film that is resistant to attack by mould \u2014 provides a practical, economical interim solution.
