Many paint brands claim to have mould-resistant properties, but how do you prove this? Inducoat has products tested in accordance with the official European standard EN 15457: an independent laboratory test that demonstrates whether the dry paint film is resistant to mould growth on the surface. Evidence beats promises.
What is EN 15457?
The full name is EN 15457:2014 – Paints and varnishes – Laboratory method for testing the efficacy of film preservatives in a coating against fungi. It is a standardised, independent and internationally recognised test method (established by CEN) that examines whether a paint or coating system is resistant to mould growth on the paint layer — unlike general or internal tests carried out by manufacturers themselves.
How does the test work?
- Preparation — the paint is applied to inert test panels, cured and allowed to dry fully for at least 28 days.
- Inoculation — the panels are exposed to common indoor moulds such as Aspergillus niger, Penicillium, Cladosporium and Alternaria.
- Incubation — 28 days in a climate chamber at ~22–28 °C and at least 90% humidity: ideal growing conditions.
- Assessment — mould growth is assessed visually on a scale from 0 (no growth) to 5. Only a score of 0 or 1 is considered mould-resistant.
Why this is important
The test is carried out under specified laboratory conditions. The results substantiate the resistance of the dry paint film under those test conditions; they do not prove a fixed service life in practice or universal performance in bathrooms, toilets, stairwells or basements. For architects, maintenance companies, housing associations and care facilities, this provides an objective basis for assessing product claims.
Why Inducoat chooses EN 15457
Inducoat does not believe in promises without evidence. If something is mould-resistant, this must be demonstrable — which is why it has Inducoat products tested by independent laboratories. This is particularly relevant in vulnerable environments (healthcare, schools, nurseries, food processing) where safety and hygiene are crucial. By communicating openly about the test method and making clear reports available on request, Inducoat chooses transparency and measurable performance over marketing language.
