Effective methods for mould testing

Inducoat values (practical) evidence and works with partners to use various testing methods when assessing mould-resistant coatings. The qDNA mould test provides the greatest insight: an accurate, sensitive measurement of which mould species are present and in what quantities. We also always recommend moisture measurements and visual inspection.

Measurement with partners

The indoor environment can be tested for mould using various techniques, depending on the objective and situation. Inducoat works with partners that perform air sampling, surface sampling and moisture measurements (including thermographic measurements) in addition to qDNA or ATP measurements. Air samples determine the concentration and type of spores in the air; surface samples (swabs, tapes or agar contact plates) identify moulds on walls, ceilings, floors and furniture.

The qDNA mould test

Inducoat strongly supports the qDNA mould test (quantitative DNA test). Molecular techniques such as PCR are used to detect and quantify specific fragments of mould DNA. This accurately determines which species are present and in what quantities — suitable for identifying specific problems, assessing the effectiveness of measures and monitoring mould concentrations.

qDNA versus ATP measurement

Handheld ATP meters use bioluminescence to detect the amount of organic material (adenosine triphosphate) and provide a quick, general indication of hygiene and cleanliness. ATP measurements are less specific: they do not distinguish between species. A qDNA test is therefore used for detailed analysis and species identification, while ATP is used for rapid screening and monitoring. We prefer the qDNA test, in collaboration with Danish specialists who are international experts in mould growth and detection.

Always supplement with moisture measurements and inspection

We always recommend moisture measurements (moisture meters and hygrometers) and a visual inspection for mould stains, discolouration, water leaks and damp areas. Combining methods provides a comprehensive picture of the mould load and the conditions that promote growth.
