Testing for mould, what you need to know

Testing for mould provides insight into the cause and severity of the problem. Various methods are available — from air and surface samples to qPCR and culture methods. Depending on the time and budget available, an accurate picture can sometimes be obtained within a few days. Together with its partners, Inducoat advises on the most suitable method.

The most common testing methods

  • Air samples — measure the concentration of mould spores in the air using an air pump and a medium (Petri dish or filter cassette), which is analysed in the laboratory.
  • Surface samples — use sterile swabs or sample containers at locations where mould growth is suspected; laboratory analysis determines presence and quantity.
  • qPCR (quantitative PCR) — a molecular technique that measures the amount of DNA from specific mould species; fast and useful for detecting specific species.
  • Culture methods — mould samples are grown on culture media (agar plates); a traditional method that provides detailed information about the species present.
  • Hybrid methods — a combination (e.g. qPCR + culture) provides a more complete picture of concentrations and species.

Choosing the right method
